According to information I've received BELPOLThe crime situation in Gomel region allegedly improved, and law and order was strengthened. However, a deeper analysis of the documents shows a completely different picture.
Statistics and reality
Claims of improvement are based on a decrease in the total number of reported crimes (-11%). Nevertheless, the crime rate in the region per 10 thousand population still exceeds the national average (44.4 vs. 39.4).
The most alarming increase was recorded in cybercrime, with the number of cases rising by 36,2%and fraud rose by a staggering 1,088.4% (from 69 to 820). As repeatedly emphasized BELPOLThe so-called law enforcement agencies are unable to effectively investigate such crimes. In response, the "authorities" have planned to address these problems at a crime coordination meeting in the second half of 2024, a step that can hardly be called effective.
Other troubling indicators:
- Domestic violence offenses increased by 5.7%.
- Increase in crimes committed by previously convicted persons, especially while under the influence of alcohol (every third recidivist crime).
Social challenges and security
In the first six months of 2024, the number of fires in the region increased (489 versus 459 for the same period in 2023) and civilian fatalities (43 vs. 34). Water safety also raises questions: the number of drownings increased from 21 to 24 cases. The inspections revealed violations in the organization of beaches and places of mass recreation near water.
In the sphere of agriculture the situation is no less alarming. The death rate of cattle has increased by 71,4 thousand heads. In addition, violations in crop safety and compliance with fire safety during the harvesting campaign were revealed.
Utilization of radiation contaminated land
Of particular concern is the use of radiation hazardous lands. In Bragin district, which was seriously affected by the Chernobyl accident, 390 hectares of such lands continue to be used. In the whole Gomel region this figure reaches 598.8 hectares. BELPOL calls such actions irresponsible and endangering the health of the local population.
BELPOL Comment:
"Despite official statements, the situation in Gomel region is far from stable. The problems, be it the growth of cybercrime, domestic violence or the use of radiation-contaminated land, require urgent and professional solutions, not formal measures, which the Lukashenko regime is unfortunately not capable of.
